2016 Beaulieu Vineyard Maestro Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

Just south of our Rutherford winery and vineyards, the Oakville appellation is home to some of the most storied Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Napa Valley. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful example of the region's capacity for producing Bordeaux varietals with nuance, structure and elegance.

“Fascinating varietal aromas of basil and currant leaves. Crushed berries and wet-earth undertones. Medium to full body, polished and caressing tannins and a flavorful finish. Some iodine and stone undertones. Drink or hold.” - James Suckling, February 2020

Tasting Note

The 2016 Maestro Collection Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon shows expressive aromatics of bright Bing cherry and rhubarb alongside graham cracker crust and gingerbread notes from the oak barrel integration. The plush, full-bodied palate is rich and ripe with layers of black currant, macerated red raspberry, holiday spiced sugar plum and savory spice flavors of nutmeg and clove. This a well-structured wine with firm yet silky-smooth tannins and balanced acidity, finishing long and persistent with hints of earth, black pepper and spice. The wine is drinking incredibly well in its youth, but will be sure to reward careful cellaring in years to come.

The extended drought was beginning to cause real concern as the 2016 growing season kicked off, but some welcomed winter rain hinted at the relief to come. After a relatively dry January we enjoyed significant rainfall in February, along with mild temperatures. Bud break was early, but was slowed by heavy April showers. While still early by historical standards, picking began about a week later than 2015, right around Labor Day, and continued at a leisurely pace, allowing the grapes to reach full flavor maturity. A traditionally sized harvest followed the lighter showing of 2015, and the extended mild season helped to balance the acids and add complexity to the layers of flavors. Considered a perfect harvest and a winemaker’s dream vintage, conditions were perfect for producing a Cabernet with beautiful fruit as well as tremendous concentration of flavors, highly saturated color, and layers of complexity.

Vineyard & Winemaking Details

Oakville AVA

The fruit for this wine is from the Gamble Vineyard in the famed Oakville appellation. The Oakville District AVA, one of the first wine growing regions within the Napa Valley recognized as an official AVA, is just a small two-mile-wide stretch of pristine vineyard sites. With well-draining, complex volcanic soils and a beautiful temperate climate, the Oakville District has gained a healthy reputation for producing some of the finest expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon in the Napa Valley.

To develop this wine’s complex fruit expression, we first cold soaked the destemmed grapes for gentle flavor and color extraction. During fermentation, regular pump overs incorporated the flavor-rich extract from the skins into the wine. Malolactic fermentation, which naturally changes the malic acid into softer lactic acid, rounded the flavors. The wine was barrel aged exclusively in French oak (75% new) for 20 months.

Jeffrey Stambor - Former Winemaker

Jeffrey Stambor joined the Beaulieu Vineyard winemaking team in 1989 as a viticulturist/enologist. As the current director of winemaking, he leads production of the winery’s world-renowned Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon, and presided over the harvest and vinification of 2013 Rarity – the extremely limited release Cabernet Sauvignon blend. He is only the fourth director of winemaking in Beaulieu Vineyard’s history, and the third to craft Georges de Latour Private Reserve over the 77-year history of that iconic wine following Andre Tchelistcheff, the original winemaker, and his immediate predecessor, Joel Aiken.
