Tasting Notes

Named in honor of the lady of the Stags’ Leap manor, the 2022 Amparo Rosé is beguiling, with a unique style all its own. A lovely bright pink hue with vibrant aromas of fresh cherry, strawberry shortcake, and pomegranate, accompanied by a touch of delicate rose petal perfume. On the palate, this Grenache-based rosé leaps forward with a bounty of juicy watermelon, red raspberry, and exotic orange blossom notes, supported by a lithe, mouthwatering texture. Small amounts of Carignane add fruit intensity to the blend, while also adding depth of color, and a touch of complexity. Made in a dry style, this crisp and elegant rosé is the perfect accompaniment to lighter fare or is delightful on its own as a refreshing aperitif.

Winemaking

After a 24-hour maceration period designed to extract color and flavor from the freshly-harvested grapes, the juice was gently “bled” off the skins in a traditional saignée method of rosé winemaking. Fermentation followed in neutral oak barrels to capture the varietal’s natural acidity and delicate fruit flavors. The young wine was racked off the lees immediately after fermentation to preserve its freshness and aged for four months in neutral oak barrels.

Vintage

The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds, like Pinot Noir. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards survive the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later-ripening red varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile.

Vineyard

Made primarily from Grenache, with most of the fruit coming from Gamble Ranch Vineyard, located mid-valley in Oakville. Originating from the Rector Creek alluvial fan near Oakville, the rocky soil of this vineyard produces Grenache grapes of wonderful intensity, ideal for our rosé. The remaining portion of Grenache comes from the Frediani Vineyard, located in Calistoga. Based in the northernmost part of Napa Valley, this warm region vineyard consistently produces some of the most refined Grenache in Napa Valley.
