Tasting Notes

The Reserve Pinot Noir is vibrant and garnet in color with aromatics bursting from the glass. An abundance Bing cherry, pomegranate, and cranberry mingle with hints of nutmeg and hazelnut. The palate offers a delightful interplay of flavors, with prominent raspberry and black tea intermingling undertones of fresh earth, sage, and toasted vanilla. The acidity is streamlined and provides balance to the pronounced but approachable tannin structure, making it a perfect choice for pairing with dishes such as roasted pork. This Pinot Noir can be enjoyed for years to come, with an age ability suggested until 2035.

Winemaking

The grapes for this Reserve Pinot Noir benefited from our state-of-the-art optical sorter technology, which scrutinizes every berry to obtain the highest quality fruit. After, we fermented the must in stainless steel tanks until dry. Gentle pump-overs during fermentation extracted flavor, color, and tannins from the skins. We then pressed and transferred all the wines to small oak barrels coopered with French oak to develop and integrate flavors over the next 18 months

Vintage

The 2021 season saw exceptionally high-quality fruit, producing some of the best in recent years. Early winter rain led to minimal precipitation for the remainder of the season, providing an ideal environment for grape development with budbreak early in April, followed by flowering and bloom in May. The summer provided early and even ripening, with veraison appearing in early July. Low yields, partly due to drought conditions, created intensely flavored fruit and smaller berry size. The moderate weather allowed for long, even ripening and our winemakers took their time bringing in grapes. This long season crafted wines with unprecedented color extraction, aromatic intensity, and structure that are equally lush and fruit driven.

Vineyard

Our Reserve Pinot Noir is sourced from our finest vineyard in Los Carneros, in the far northwest corner of the Carneros appellation. Unlike the uplifted bay-bottom clay soils in most of the Carneros region, the soils at our estate vineyard are influenced by volcanic origin. Combining this well-draining, rocky upland soil with the extreme western location, closer to the Pacific Ocean and San Pablo Bay, the site is an ideal place to grow Burgundian varieties, of which up to 20 distinct Pinot Noir clones are planted. These reserve-quality grapes yield impeccably balanced Pinot Noir with abundant personality. A selection of Dijon clones perfumed the wine with floral and vibrant red-fruit notes, while Pommard clones enhanced the wine’s dark-fruit flavors, structure and minerality.
