Tasting Notes

Truly exemplary of the winery’s ability to combine power and grace, the 2020 Investor is layered, nuanced, and inviting, with alluring notes of juicy black cherry, blackcurrant, crushed blueberry, and dark plum, sitting alongside baking spiced notes of allspice, caramel, and clove. The fruit character is supported by black pepper spice, anise seed, and floral potpourri, interwoven with hints of fresh thyme, wild lavender, and sage. The well-structured mouthfeel is plush and harmonious with velvety-rich tannins that coat the palate, finishing with a core of fresh acidity and brightness. Pairs perfectly alongside a variety of dishes and certain to enliven any celebratory occasion.

Scores & Accolades

  • 97
Top 100 Cellar Selection of 2023
“Red blends of this type rarely shine as brightly. This ultra concentrated and smooth-textured blend including Merlot, Petite Sirah and Malbec is inky dark in color, aromatic in blueberries, blackcurrants and mint followed by oak spices and dark chocolate on the palate. Creamy in texture, it is laden in massive but melted tannins. Best from 2026–2036.” Cellar Selection - Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast

“An open and delicious red with red fruit, plum and walnut aromas and flavors. Sage and thyme. Full-bodied with chewy tannins, yet it’s juicy and delicious. Dark chocolate at the end. Drink now.” - James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, February 2023

Winemaking

Maceration and fermentation followed suit for each of the varieties, which allowed our winemakers to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each varietal to its maximum potential. The wine aged in oak for 20 months - the Petite Sirah in American oak barrels (24% new) while the Bordeaux varieties go to French oak (35% new). The final assemblage was blended just prior to bottling.

Vintage

The 2020 season will be remembered for factors beyond the typical harvest season. It was a warm, dry winter and the rain and cooler weather didn’t arrive until the end of March. While the mild spring season was a great early start, summer brought very cool mornings and very warm days, but then harvest was interrupted by wildfires across California, which came as grapes started to be picked, and we were very fortunate that none of our vineyards were in the areas of the active fires. The white wine harvest started in mid to late August while the red wine harvest was smaller yielding and proved to be one of the most challenging in history, but our winemakers remained optimistic and very complimentary of the high quality achieved from this unprecedented vintage.

Vineyard

The Investor is a red wine that beautifully blends together the unique flavors and expressions of Merlot, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, resulting in a powerful, yet approachable assemblage with significant fruit presence. The Merlot contributes fresh red berry aromatics and a soft, velvety texture to balance the power of Petite Sirah, which adds concentration, tannins, spice, and blueberry flavors. The Cabernet Sauvignon further increases the final blend’s complexity and depth, and the Malbec’s incredibly vibrant floral aromatics heighten the blend’s freshness. Most of the Petite Sirah fruit comes from estate vineyards in Oakville and Oak Knoll, and additional fruit is sourced from a diverse selection of northern and southern Napa Valley vineyards to broaden the wine’s floral and spicy characteristics. The Merlot is sourced from our Stags’ Leap estate vineyards as well as grower vineyards in the heart of Napa Valley, and a selection of southern valley floor Cabernet Sauvignon fruit makes up the balance of the blend.
