Chabot Vineyard lies east of the Silverado Trail, north of the road leading up Howell Mountain to Bancroft and Steinhauer Ranch. The chunks of shiny obsidian heavily strewn through its soil reflect the locale, known as “Glass Mountain.” An underlying layer of pumice and bedrock ensures excellent drainage. The inky, highly structured, deeply flavored Cabernet from this vineyard was the first that Beringer Vineyards elected to bottle as a Private Reserve, in 1977, and it continues to be a frequent component of contemporary vintages of Private Reserve. Chabot Cabernet consistently has finely knit tannins, and layers of black currant with hints of mint and cedar. Careful attention is paid to vineyard blocks, which are kept separate and vinified with a goal of extracting maximum flavor.
“Lots of rich black-cherry and blackcurrant aromas with milk chocolate, wet leaves and sandalwood. It’s full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins. Rich and broad with a warm finish. ” - James Suckling, January 2021
“Another small, single vineyard release, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Chabot Vineyard comes from St. Helena and is 100% varietal that was aged in 72% new French oak. It has a complex, nuanced nose of red and black fruits, black tea, lavender, and tobacco. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, elegant Cabernet with a solid spine of acidity, firm tannins, and outstanding length. It’s beautifully done, but it’s going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and should evolve gracefully for 10-15 years or more.” - Jeb Dunnuck, January 28, 2021
“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Chabot Vineyard is striking. Black fruit, lavender, licorice, spice, chocolate, melted road tar and licorice build in a powerful, virile wine endowed with tremendous structure, power and concentration. At times, the Chabot can be deceiving, such is its finesse, but there is quite a bit of depth here. As Beringer fans know, this is a very special site, and one of the original vineyards used for the flagship Private Reserve Cabernet.” - Antonio Galloni, March 2021
Mark Beringer, great-great-grandson of Beringer Vineyards' founding brother Jacob Beringer, was immersed in wine from the moment he was born in the heart of the Napa Valley. As the direct descendant to Beringer's first winemaker and one of the most iconic family names in Napa Valley wine history, he knew from a young age that he would follow in the footsteps of his ancestors. As a young man he spent many hours working in his family's wine store in Saint Helena, expanding his knowledge of wine as well as gaining an appreciation for wines outside of the famous region he has always called home.
