Description

Description

From its founding in 1876 by Jacob and Frederick Beringer, a pioneering and unwavering spirit kept Beringer on a journey to become one of America's most celebrated wineries. This journey was not without its challenges, however, the biggest of which arose in 1920 with the passage of Prohibition. During the following decade, a quiet knock on the door and a whisper would gain you entry to a speakeasy, where often the owner was a strong and determined woman known as a Whisper Sister. Our latest Beringer Bros. offering celebrates Bertha Beringer, Beringer’svery own Whisper Sister, whose ingenuity helped the property survive when 95% of California wineries were forced to close. Today, at over 140 years old, Beringer holds the distinction of being the longest-operating winery in Napa –an achievement that we owe to Bertha.

Wine & Vintage Details

Tasting Note

A deep violet color sets the stage for classic Cabernet Sauvignon aromas of plum preserves, black cherry and creme de cassis. Rich and full bodied, the palate shows distinct notes of blackberry, blueberry jam and cocoa accented by oak spice and vanilla.

Napa Valley

Winemaking

This Cabernet Sauvignon is picked at the peak of flavor development from top sites across Napa and Sonoma. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with frequent pump-overs to maximize color and flavor extraction. The wine is then aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, 20% new, for a warm, vanilla complexity. A splash of Petite Sirah, a classic Napa variety during the Prohibition era, is blended in for authenticity and an infusion of body and spice.

Mark Beringer - Winemaker

Mark Beringer, great-great-grandson of Beringer Vineyards' founding brother Jacob Beringer, was immersed in wine from the moment he was born in the heart of the Napa Valley. As the direct descendant to Beringer's first winemaker and one of the most iconic family names in Napa Valley wine history, he knew from a young age that he would follow in the footsteps of his ancestors. As a young man he spent many hours working in his family's wine store in Saint Helena, expanding his knowledge of wine as well as gaining an appreciation for wines outside of the famous region he has always called home.
