Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Exuberant, rich and fruit-driven, the 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet is deep and juicy, with plenty of black cherry, black raspberry and blackberry. Mint, black licorice and graham cracker spice add nuance to the core of black fruit in this exceptionally elegant, complex wine. A great example of the exemplary vintage, this 2013 drinks well at this early stage, but is compactly structured with dense tannins to age gracefully over the next decade or so.

"This is the real deal with lead pencil and oyster shell. Currant undertones. Full body and fine tannins. Flavorful and intense. A beauty. A shame it's the last vintage! Drink now or hold." - James Suckling

    Wine Advocate

"The most underrated wines in the entire Etude portfolio are their Cabernet Sauvignons. I had a chance to taste from the great 2013 vintage. They are all noteworthy achievements. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon (like all of the others), shows a dense opaque purple color, notes of pen ink, blackberry, licorice, creosote and a long, full-bodied, heady mouthfeel. This is a much smaller production cuvee than usual because 46 barrels were destroyed in the earthquake in August 2014. This wine should drink well for 10-15 years." - Wine Advocate

Winemaking

Winemaking

The grapes were cold soaked for 3-5 days and fermented on their skins in open top fermenters. An extended maceration period followed fermentation to help modify the depth and mouthfeel of the wine, and to fully extract color, flavor and aromatics. The young wine was then racked into small French oak barrels - using a selection of coopers and forests to accentuate the vineyard distinctions - where it aged for 11 months. In order to maintain the unique characteristics of each vineyard, each block and lot was kept separate until this point when the assemblage was blended. The resulting wine was returned to barrel for an additional 9 months of aging.&

Jon Priest - Winemaker

For more than a decade Jon has fashioned Etude wines with a simple creed. Inspired winegrowing diminishes the need for a winemaker to intervene in the cellar. Whether sourcing from the estate Grace Benoist Ranch in Sonoma's Los Carneros, or vineyards like Fiddlestix and North Canyon in famed growing regions of California's Central Coast, his focus is on coaxing the very best from the vineyard. It shows in every glass of Etude.

Vintage

Vintage

The 2013 vintage began with a warm, dry spring that brought early bud break and created ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set. With no surprises throughout the growing season, temperatures were consistently favorable and even, resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and started ripening. The overall dry season made for a short harvest & - ; one of the earliest and most condensed of recent memory.

The Etude Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is handcrafted with grapes from unique benchland vineyards representing the major sub-appellations of Napa Valley. The 2016 Cabernet was sourced with fruit from some of the most highly regarded winegrowers in Napa Valley — Vine Hill Ranch in Oakville, Morisoli Vineyards in Rutherford and Meteor Vineyard in Coombsville. By deliberately sourcing fruit from this group of exemplary vineyards, this wine exhibits the full potential of Cabernet fruit flavors and textures with vitality and finesse.
