Named after Amparo Grange, the lady of the Stags' Leap Estate from 1941 to 1955, this wine embodies her style of elegance and gracious living. As part of the Rhone-style wines for which the estate is renowned, this dry Grenache Rosé benefits from the classical standard of viticulture, care of the land, and winemaking that is as relevant today as it was in 1893 when Stags' Leap Winery celebrated its first vintage.
Named in honor of the lady of the Stags’ Leap manor, the 2021 Amparo Rosé is beguiling, with a unique style all its own. A lovely watermelon pink hue with vibrant aromas of fresh cherry, strawberry crème, and white nectarine, accompanied by a touch of delicate rose petal perfume. On the palate, this Grenache-based rosé leaps forward with a bounty of bright Bing cherry, red raspberry, and exotic orange blossom notes, supported by a lithe, mouthwatering texture. Small amounts of Syrah add fruit intensity to the blend, while also adding depth of color, and a touch of complexity. Made in a dry style, this crisp and elegant rosé is the perfect accompaniment to lighter fare or is delightful on its own as a refreshing aperitif.
The 2021 season was joyous and welcomed after the challenges of previous vintages, producing exceptionally high-quality fruit, some of the best in recent years. Rain early in the year led to almost no notable precipitation for the rest of the season, providing an ideal environment for grapes to flower, bloom, and set in early spring, with budbreak early in April, followed by flowering and bloom in May. The summer saw early and even ripening throughout the valley, with veraison appearing in early July. Low yields (in part due to drought conditions), created fruit that is intensely flavored and smaller in berry size. One of the earliest starts, harvest began with white wine grapes coming in towards late July, while red wine grapes arrived about a month later, at the end of August. With optimal ripening and taste, our winemakers took their time bringing grapes in, crafting wines of fantastic character, with amazing color extraction, aromatic intensity, tremendous balance, and structure, that are equally lush and fruity. A tremendous year to taste the nuances and terroir distinction from around the valley.
Made from 89% Grenache, with most of the fruit coming from Gamble Ranch Vineyard, located mid-valley in Oakville. Originating from the Rector Creek alluvial fan near Oakville, the rocky soil of this vineyard produces Grenache grapes of wonderful intensity, ideal for our rosé. The remaining portion of Grenache comes from the Frediani Vineyard, located in Calistoga. Based in the northernmost part of Napa Valley, this warm region vineyard consistently produces some of the most refined Grenache grapes that Winemaker Christophe Paubert has ever tasted.
After a 24-hour maceration period designed to extract color and flavor from the freshly-harvested grapes, the juice was gently “bled” off the skins in a traditional saignée method of rosé winemaking. Fermentation followed in neutral oak barrels to capture the varietal’s natural acidity and delicate fruit flavors. The young wine was racked off the lees immediately after fermentation to preserve its freshness and aged for three months in neutral oak barrels.
For Christophe Paubert, Winemaker and General Manager at Stags’ Leap Winery, the identity of a wine is found through the terroir. Christophe’s career has spanned the industry from sales to winemaking, and his impressive background includes positions at Chateau d’Yquem and Gruaud-Larose as well as projects in Chile, Spain and Washington State. But it was the terroir of Stags’ Leap that drew him to California.
