Tasting Notes

The Knights Valley Red Blend is ruby in the glass and transparent throughout. On the nose, pure red fruit aromas; red currant, cranberry, pomegranate, and rose hips. On the palate, floral rose notes cascade into complex red fruit flavors. Cranberry and red currant dominate, but secondary flavors of baking spice, clove, and cardamom help to create an experience not unlike that of a berry cobbler. Strong acidity helps to support the fruit flavors while silky tannin lends a solid structure for the delicate notes to sit upon. The finish is long and delightful, all in all a mid-palate delight. For us, letting the wine decant for an hour lent huge rewards as the fruit flavors unwound a bit and the wine gained an even more pronounced perfume. Ready to drink now, but will develop over the next 4-5 years.

Vintage

The 2020 vintage was a combination of a warm, dry winter, late March rains, and incidental circumstance beyond the typical season. The mild spring weather provided a great early start which was later tempered by the warmth of the summer growing season and the frequent heat spikes. 2020 with its low rainfall, low yields and dynamic weather had set the stage for fruit with pronounced micro-climatic and aromatic complexity. While vineyard and winery working conditions were adapted at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic with extensive safety protocols, further challenges were manifested by wildfires across California that would prove an even greater challenge to the latter half of the vintage. All estate fruit was continuously evaluated and only those sites unaffected were harvested. Knight’s Valley because of its location was a particularly good example of this. The limited supply of the resulting wines shows all the phenolic ripeness, acidic tension, and exceptional nuance of this challenging vintage.
