2019 Beringer Luminus Oak Knoll Chardonnay

2019 Beringer Luminus Oak Knoll Chardonnay

2019 Beringer Luminus Oak Knoll Chardonnay

Luminus, meaning “light” in Latin, naturally represents the radiance of this exceptional Chardonnay. Like the brightness and purity the name conjures, Chardonnay from the Oak Knoll district is distinct for its uncommon focus. Big Ranch Vineyard offers fruit known for its elegance and balance. Winemaker Mark Beringer has always gravitated towards this acid driven, crisp and pleasing, food-friendly style of Chardonnay.

Awards & Accolades

“The 2019 Chardonnay Luminus comes from the Oak Knoll District, which is a cooler region in the southern part of the valley. Brought up in 30% new French oak, it offers a beautiful bouquet of ripe Meyer lemons, white flowers, sappy herbs, and a touch of brioche. Nicely textured and medium-bodied, with both richness and freshness, this outstanding wine will keep for 2-4 years.” - Jeb Dunnuck, January 28th, 2021

“Dried apricot, pineapple, lemon curd, crushed stones and some hay on the nose. It’s full-bodied and buttery with concentrated mineral and ripe-fruit layers. Some spice, too. Excellent length. Drink or hold.” - James Suckling, January 2021

    Wine & Spirits

“This chardonnay grows at Beringer’s Big Ranch Road Vineyard, where Oak Knoll cool tightens around the fleshiness of the citrus flavors. Ripe orange and citrus pith flavors integrate the oak as the wine layers its flavors and lasts, a little floral, a little smoky and firm. For a veal chop.” - Josh Greene, October 2021

Wine & Vintage Details

Tasting Note

Luminus features bright aromas of white flowers, star jasmine, honeysuckle and lemon zest. The captivating aromas lead to a flavorful and medium-bodied palate where white nectarine, essence of bergamot, lemon and lime notes mingle with creamy butterscotch and hazelnut nougat flavors. The judicious use of French oak lends a subtle nutty spice character. Bâttonage provides an unexpectedly plush mouthfeel, and bright acidity leaves a lingering, pleasant finish with hints of stone minerality.

Vintage Note

Abundant late winter rains gave the soils much needed moisture to kick off the 2019 growing season. The long, warm summer saw few extreme heat events and the typical foggy mornings set the stage for producing vibrant and expressive wines. The long and relatively mild finish to the season helped to preserve freshness and finesse in the fruit with extended hangtime producing great color, flavor, structure and tannin. Grapes for 2019 Luminus were picked between September 16th and September 30th. Overall, the season was marked by exceptional fruit development with bright acidity, producing an outstanding vintage of wine.

Mark Beringer - Winemaker

Mark Beringer, great-great-grandson of Beringer Vineyards' founding brother Jacob Beringer, was immersed in wine from the moment he was born in the heart of the Napa Valley. As the direct descendant to Beringer's first winemaker and one of the most iconic family names in Napa Valley wine history, he knew from a young age that he would follow in the footsteps of his ancestors. As a young man he spent many hours working in his family's wine store in Saint Helena, expanding his knowledge of wine as well as gaining an appreciation for wines outside of the famous region he has always called home.
