    Wine Enthusiast

"Sweet, succulent strawberry opens the gate to a viscous, textured midpalate of juicy acidity and lasting freshness in this wine which has plenty of meat on its bones.” - Virginie Boone, October 2020

  • 90

    Wine Advocate

“The 2019 Pinot Noir Rosé Grace Benoist Ranch comes from Pommard clone planted to a very cool area of this vast ranch in Carneros. Very pale salmon-pink colored, it reveals delicate floral scents of red roses and lavender over a core of redcurrants and raspberry leaves with a waft of bouquet garni. The medium-bodied palate is refreshingly dry and crisp with a good intensity of red berry flavors and an herbal lift on the finish. 671 cases were made.” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW

    Vinous

“The 2019 Rosé Pinot Noir Grace Benoist Ranch emerges from the very highest part of the ranch. Bright, vibrant rose petals, crushed red berry, orange peel, mint and white pepper build in a finely sculpted wine.” - Antonio Galloni, March 2021

Tasting Notes

Elegant, restrained and alluring, this rosé is full of fresh cut strawberry, raspberry and perfumed cherry blossom aromas on the nose, while the palate shows lifted ripe fruit flavors of strawberry crème and blood orange, alongside subtle hints of jasmine flowers. This rosé has substance and balance, with mouthwatering acidity, yet showing a creamy rounded mid-palate with great texture and a lingering, notably pleasing finish. Bold enough to go beyond just warm weather sipping, this is an ideal apéritif well suited to grace holiday tables and memorable meals all year round.

Vintage

The 2019 harvest started one to two weeks later than previous years, mostly due to February rains, but because the vines were in their winter dormancy, it did not affect the 2019 crop. Spring continued to be wet with some rain during flowering, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Most grapes ripened at lower sugars, thanks to the extended, cool growing season, and winemakers were pleased with the full flavors, fresh acidity and superb balance of the 2019 fruit. Wildfires in October did not impact this year’s harvest as the vast majority of the grapes were already brought in, resulting in a crop size pretty much on par with previous years.

Vineyard & Winemaking Details

Carneros AVA

Carneros

Vineyard

The Etude Rosé of Pinot Noir is sourced exclusively from parcels on our Estate Vineyard in Carneros at Grace Benoist Ranch where the cooler climate is well-suited for producing a rosé of exceptional quality. The cooling influences of the San Pablo Bay and Pacific Ocean allow for delicate maturation of the grapes and retention of the bright flavors found in the vineyard. This distinctive wine is crafted with Pinot Noir grapes that are grown specifically to showcase the attributes we desire in our rosé – fresh aromatics, vibrant flavors and natural acidity.

Winemaking

This distinctive wine was crafted with Pinot Noir grapes that are grown specifically to showcase the attributes we desire in our rosé. Handpicked at night, the grapes are brought to the winery and gently whole cluster pressed while the fruit is still cool, being careful to have minimal skin contact. The juice was transferred to older French oak barrels and fermented under cool temperatures. The wine is then aged sur lie (on the lees) for four months, with no malolactic fermentation, to preserve crisp acidity and high toned delicate aromas.

Jon Priest - Winemaker

For more than a decade Jon has fashioned Etude wines with a simple creed. Inspired winegrowing diminishes the need for a winemaker to intervene in the cellar. Whether sourcing from the estate Grace Benoist Ranch in Sonoma's Los Carneros, or vineyards like Fiddlestix and North Canyon in famed growing regions of California's Central Coast, his focus is on coaxing the very best from the vineyard. It shows in every glass of Etude.
