A proprietary blend representing our estate vineyards, featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Merlot, the 2018 Twelve Falls is ripe, juicy and succulent with layers of aromatic dark berry fruits and savory spice. On the nose and palate, discover notes of blueberry, blackberry and currant alongside floral aromatics of wild violet, anise seed and black pepper, supported lifted holiday spice notes of cinnamon, clove, cedar and cardamom, beguiling your senses with a nod to the well-integrated oak aging. Deep, full and rich, the mouthfeel offers nuances of wild chaparral shrubs leading to a more subtle, silky, present tannins finishing with finesse and generosity, all harkening back to the estate’s ability to entwine depth of flavor with grace and elegance. An exceptional wine from an exceptional vintage, drinking beautifully now and will develop seamlessly over time.
The Napa Valley region enjoyed a stunning, near picture-perfect 2018 growing season including good winter rains, mild spring weather and steady temperatures throughout that allowed for even flowering and bud break. These ideal growing conditions were followed by a cool, even and slow-paced harvest which allowed the winery to vinify wines at a gentle pace. The resulting 2018 wines are of very high quality with lower alcohol, concentrated flavors, color and excellent acidity.
Crafted as an ode to our own Stags’ Leap Winery Estate Vineyards, Twelve Falls is a barrel selection red blend that beautifully mimics the varietal composition of these plantings. Year after year, the blocks surrounding the historic Manor House produce on average around 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Petite Sirah, 10% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 5% Malbec fruit, and the elegant Twelve Falls is a perfect reflection of this assemblage, crafted as a tribute to showcase the best fruit the estate offers.
Maceration followed suit for each of the varieties, which allowed Winemaker Christophe Paubert to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each variety to its maximum potential. The Cabernet Sauvignon aged in high quality new French oak barrels for 19 months, while the Merlot went to neutral French oak, and the Petite Sirah went into neutral American oak. The final assemblage was blended just prior to bottling.
For Christophe Paubert, Winemaker and General Manager at Stags’ Leap Winery, the identity of a wine is found through the terroir. Christophe’s career has spanned the industry from sales to winemaking, and his impressive background includes positions at Chateau d’Yquem and Gruaud-Larose as well as projects in Chile, Spain and Washington State. But it was the terroir of Stags’ Leap that drew him to California.
