Wine & Vintage Details

Tasting Note

The 2018 Maestro Collection Touriga Nacional is a highly aromatic and complex wine honoring the unique character of this Portuguese varietal, bursting with intense aromas of blueberry, boysenberry, violet, wild sage and subtle oak spice. The palate opens to a fresh and well-balanced structure expressing endless flavors of lilac and macerated blackberry. The integrated tannins are round and velvety, providing a plush mouthfeel ending with a bright, lifted finish. This is a delightful expression of a grape varietal not often seen in the Napa Valley and will certainly be a pleasing discovery for many.

Vintage Note

The Napa Valley region enjoyed a stunning, near picture-perfect 2018 growing season including good winter rains, mild spring weather and steady temperatures throughout that allowed for even flowering and bud break. These ideal growing conditions were followed by a cool, even and slow-paced harvest which allowed the winery to vinify wines at a gentle pace. The resulting 2018 wines are of very high quality with lower alcohol, concentrated flavors, color and excellent acidity. Winemaker Trevor Durling chose to craft this wine during these perfect conditions to showcase this inaugural vintage of Touriga, a tribute to the phenomenal expression of this varietal.

Vineyard & Winemaking Details

Calistoga AVA

This Touriga Nacional is sourced from grapes grown in the historic Beaulieu Vineyard estate Ranch No. 12 vineyard. BV Ranch No. 12, located in Calistoga, experiences dramatic diurnal temperature swings with hot days and very cool evening. There is a wide range of soil types in this vineyard and is home to Beaulieu’s most diverse set of vine plantings including Touriga, Tempranillio, Charbono, Marsanne and many more.

After hand harvesting, the grapes were immediately delivered to the winery where they were destemmed and cold soaked for 5 days to gently ease color and flavor. During the roughly 12-day fermentation, timely pump overs kept the skins in contact with the juice for excellent flavor and tannin extraction. The wine spent 16 months in 50% new French oak before being blended, giving the final wine tremendous complexity and grace. Only 280 cases produced.
