Penfolds Max’s Cabernet Sauvignon is a tribute to former Chief Winemaker, Max Schubert 1948-1975, a legend in Penfolds history. Max’s constant pursuit of excellence paved the way for those who followed in his footsteps and also allowed the status and heritage of Penfolds to grow. Max’s Cabernet Sauvignon displays the Penfolds‘ stamp’ inspired by Max Schubert.
Classic cabernet sauvignon lift clearly identifies the varietal from the first waft. Aromas sitting at the riper end of the spectrum, no evidence of tomato leaf, or capsicum, with only a suggestion of spearmint. Dark berries dominate, with classic blackberry liqueur stamping authority from the outset. Lovely oak derived exotic spices create a sense of anticipation. The aromatic enticement is rewarded from the first sip. On the palate, ripe raspberry, bramble black currant and blood plum flesh out the fruit spectrum. Oak derived cassia bark and dark liquorice notes temper the gorgeous fruits. Taught, lingering tannins create texture and definition. No need for extended maturation, this cabernet is already singing, although no doubt a few years will see further layers of complexity emerge.
Growing regions across South Australia experienced a cool and wet winter and spring, conditions which provided the vines with good soil moisture profiles. Several longstanding rainfall records across South Australia were broken. Spring was typically windy, which caused some challenges with fruit set, however it warded off any danger from frost. The prevailing cool conditions extended the growing season with flowering and veraison occurring later than the long-term average. Select regions took two weeks longer than usual from the advent of budburst to flowering. No heatwaves were recorded, with only a handful of days recording temperatures above 40 degrees. Warmer weather in March was welcomed, allowing grapes to finish ripening with great colors and varietal character.
Peter joined the winemaking team in 1989, initially in the craftsmanship of sparkling wines, before moving on to reds as Penfolds Red Wine Maker. In 2002 Peter became the fourth ever Chief Winemaker for Penfolds. Together with his fellow winemakers, Peter’s careful custodianship has ensured that Grange and the other ‘older’ members of the Penfolds family, have continued to set the benchmark for their style and quality, while new additions to the range push the boundaries ever wider.
