Description

Chateau St. Jean has a long history of crafting expressive Pinot Noir from various regions throughout Sonoma County. This passion for excellence in Pinot Noir has led Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren to one of the most revered appellations for Sonoma County Pinot Noir; Russian River Valley. Grapes for this wine were selected from the Hallberg vineyard just outside Sebastopol. The vineyard features Goldridge sandy-loam soils and enjoys beautiful sunny afternoon weather tempered by fog and cooling coastal breezes from the Pacific, about 20 miles away.

Wine Advocate

"Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2017 Pinot Noir Hallberg Vineyard reveals pronounced notes of Bing cherries, pomegranate and warm raspberries with wafts of dried Provence herbs, underbrush and fungi. Medium-bodied, the palate has wonderfully delicate red berry and earthy layers with a soft texture and just enough freshness, finishing with great harmony. 481 cases were made.”Lisa Perrotti-Brown, August 13th, 2020

Tasting Note

The combination of dry farming and cool microclimate shows in the intensity of ruby color, pure flavors and seamless structure of the Hallberg Vineyard Pinot Noir. The complex nose opens with juicy aromas of red fruit and berry confiture lifted with airy notes of white tea, unfolding to warm and spicy hints of cinnamon, sarsaparilla and white pepper. The wine glides on the palate with luxurious texture and seamless balance, its vibrant acidity enhancing the intensity of fruit on the mid-palate redolent of black cherry, kirsch and grenadine, underlain by layers of minerality, cocoa, licorice and a lift of mandarin peel on the long, complex finish.

Vineyard

Grapes for this wine were selected from the Hallberg vineyard just outside Sebastopol. The vineyard features Goldridge sandy-loam soils and enjoys beautiful sunny afternoon weather tempered by fog and cooling coastal breezes from the Pacific, about 20 miles away. For this vintage of Russian River Valley Pinot selected fruit featuring the Dijon clone 777 (15%) and clone 828 (85%).Clone 777 originated in the Morey St Denis region of the Cote d'Or, and features small concentrated berries and small clusters with strong and intense color and aroma. Burgundian clone 828 arrived as a 'suitcase' clone, brought from France surreptitiously. The clone is known for fruit with medium size, intense and fruity, round and full with good aging potential.

Winemaking

The Pinot Noir grapes were handled very gently from vineyard to winery. Fruit underwent a three-day cold soak prior to fermentation. Free run juice was drained and the new wine sent directly to barrel to complete malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged for 16 months in 100% French oak (55% new) before blending and bottling.
