Scores & Accolades

“Black and green olives with walnut-shell and clove undertones. On the palate this is as velvety as it is concentrated, the ripeness easily carrying all the tannins, the finish very long, vibrant and mineral. Stunning already, but this has enormous aging potential. Drink or hold.” - James Suckling

    Vinous

“The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Steinhauer Vineyard is a rich, enveloping wine. Dark fruit, herb, smoke, wild flowers and menthol all run through this deeply expressive, potent Cabernet Sauvignon. Still very much tightly wound, the Steinhauer is one of the more reticent wines in the range. Give it a few years in bottle to fully open up.” - Antonio Galloni

    Wine Enthusiast

“Weighty, substantive and grippy in tannin, this is a bold, powerful wine that is unflinchingly ripe and richly layered. Black cherry and smoky oak compete for affection on the lengthy palate, asking for more time to develop in bottle. Enjoy best from 2026–2031.” - Virginie Boone

Winemaking

Mark Beringer - Winemaker

Mark Beringer, great-great-grandson of Beringer Vineyards' founding brother Jacob Beringer, was immersed in wine from the moment he was born in the heart of the Napa Valley. As the direct descendant to Beringer's first winemaker and one of the most iconic family names in Napa Valley wine history, he knew from a young age that he would follow in the footsteps of his ancestors. As a young man he spent many hours working in his family's wine store in Saint Helena, expanding his knowledge of wine as well as gaining an appreciation for wines outside of the famous region he has always called home.

A dry January was followed by a wet February, while temperatures remained mild. Bud break was early but slowed as April arrived with consistent showers. The growing season proceeded at a leisurely pace, allowing fruit to reach full maturity with balanced acid and complex layers of flavor.

Vineyard

Howell Mountain AVA

Howell Mountain

Vineyard

Originally known as Tre Colline for its memorable undulating terrain, the 36-acre benchland vineyard was renamed in 2003 to honor Beringer’s long-time vineyard manager, Bob Steinhauer, who helped establish the reserve level vineyards across Napa Valley. At 1,800 feet elevation, southwest facing on Howell Mountain, just northeast of Angwin, Steinhauer Ranch features volcanic iron-rich soils notable for their rich red color, with a friable, loose texture. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc thrive in the sparse, infertile soil where cool mountain temperatures with high solar radiation above the fog line allow grapes to languish on the vine, developing bold tannins and distinctive notes.
