Chateau St. Jean’s Reserve wines are crafted by selecting the vineyard lots from throughout Sonoma County that offer the most generous fruit expression and the ability to age. Our line of Reserves wines includes incredible expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Malbec.
“The 2016 Malbec Reserve is a blend of 89% Malbec and 11% Cab Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it gives pronounced notes of baked black cherries, blackberry pie and warm blueberries with touches of violets, spice cake and tobacco leaf. Full-bodied, rich and decadent, the palate has a firm, grainy texture and oodles of freshness, finishing with fantastic length. 379 cases were made.”Lisa Perrotti-Brown, August 13th, 2020
”The 2016 Malbec Reserve is a racy, exotic wine. Super-ripe black cherry, raspberry jam pomegranate, chocolate and sweet French oak are front and center. This flamboyant, inviting red is sure to be a crowd pleaser.”
This Reserve Malbec bursts forth with vivid aromas of black cherry, fresh blackberry and blackcurrant, followed by hints of clove and a bright essence of violets. The nose leads to a lush palate with powerful, grainy tannins that will smooth with age. Distinct flavors of blackberry pie, black cherry and sweet baking spices meld together in this round, plush wine. Balanced acidity carries this wine through a long, rich finish.
While the extended drought caused concern as the 2016 growing season began, significant February rainfall followed by heavy April showers (slowing an early bud break) created new challenges. The 2016 harvest was more traditional in size, and the extended mild season balanced the acid and added complexity to the fruit.
Although widely known as a grape of southwestern France or Argentina, Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren has championed Malbec because of its ability to flourish in areas of Sonoma. Here, Sonoma Malbec stands alone. The grapes for this wine comes from the Asti Vineyard in Alexander Valley (Block 17C) at the northern end of Sonoma County, as well as the St. Jean Estate vineyard (Block 20) in the heart of Sonoma Valley. A small amount of Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon balances out the blend.
Individual lots of each variety were aged separately for 28 months exclusively in small French oak barrels (56% new). Each lot was tasted and the most outstanding Malbec barrels were selected and blended with similarly selected lots of Cabernet Sauvignon to complete the wine.
