“This is a rich red with lots of ripe fruit, chocolate and vanilla character. It’s a little obvious and old-school now, but delivers freshness and stature at the finish. The tannins and everything else needs to come together. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, malbec and petit verdot. Better in 2022.” - JamesSuckling.com, April 2020

Wine Advocate

“A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Cinq Cepages Proprietary Red Wine is deep garnet-purple in color. It rocks up with expressive notions of cassis, warm plums and black raspberries plus hints of pencil shavings, lilacs, oolong tea, unsmoked cigars and charcuterie. Full-bodied, the palate explodes with youthful black fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing long and layered. 6,497 cases were made.”Lisa Perrotti-Brown, August 13th, 2020

Vinous

”A powerful wine, the 2016 Cinq Cépages is incredibly refined in this vintage, and yet achieves that while retaining its natural depth and textural richness. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice, leather and spice are some of the many notes that build in a beautifully layered Cinq Cépages that, unusually, will drink well right out of the gate. In a word: impressive.”

Tasting Note

Big and rich, with mouth-filling ripe red and black mountain and benchland fruits accented with black tea, cassis, black licorice, a touch of fennel, black olive and sweet blueberry fruit leather. Hints of cedar cigar box and tobacco sit alongside chalky tannins. More structured than Vintage 2015, Cinq Cepages is rewarding today and will reveal complex layers of flavor with proper cellaring.

Vintage

The extended drought caused concern as the 2016 growing season began, but welcomed winter rain hinted at the relief to come. After a relatively dry January significant rainfall arrived in February, along with mild temperatures. Bud break was early, but was slowed by heavy April showers. A traditionally sized harvest followed the lighter vintage of 2015, and the extended mild season helped balance the acids and add complexity to the fruit.

Winemaking

The 2016 Cinq Cepages (“Five Varieties”) is a blend of the classic Bordeaux grapes consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), Merlot (11%), Cabernet Franc (6%), Malbec (2%), and Petit Verdot (1%). All five varietal components are used each vintage to create the stylized blend that is Cinq Cepages. Before blending, each component is aged separately for 20 months in 100% French oak, 49% new. Once the components are assembled, the blend spends almost an entire additional year in the bottle before release.
