    Wine Advocate

"The 2013 Saint Helena Cabernet Sauvignon Home Vineyard is more focused on blueberry and blackberry licorice and floral notes. They all can be approached early on (3-4 years), but will age for 25+ years." - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, October 2013

Winemaking

Winemaking

With Cabernet of this quality, a minimalist approach to winemaking is preferred to preserve the integrity of each site's expression of terroir. Vinifying the fruit from each vineyard separately, Laurie used tailored pump-over techniques for optimal extraction, and then aged the wines in hand-selected, custom-toasted barrels of French Nevers oak from coopers with whom Beringer has long-established relationships.

Laurie Hook - Former Winemaker

Laurie Hook, Beringer's Winemaker Emeritus, began her career in the winemaking program at University of California at Davis, which is noted for training some of the best winemakers around the world. Upon graduating in 1984, she traveled to Australia to work at a small winery. After returning to work a harvest in Sonoma, Laurie came to Beringer as an enologist in 1986, a job that allowed her to solidify the scientific side of her training. In 1997, she was named Assistant Winemaker to Beringer Winemaster Ed Sbragia, and in 2000 she was promoted to Winemaker for Beringer Vineyards. Laurie lead our winemaking team for 15 years before transitioning to winemaker Emeritus in 2015.

Vintage

Vintage

The 2013 vintage began with a warm, dry spring and relatively early bud break. Summer was notably consistent with even, warm temperatures throughout. Harvest began quite early in August, and by September the majority of whites and lighter reds were completely off the vines. Cool yet sunny weather in October allowed the final grapes on the vine to linger and develop great phenolic and flavor maturities while maintaining steady sugar levels. Overall, it was a high quality crop that was above average in quantity.

Saint Helena

Vineyard

The Saint Helena Home Vineyard is largely responsible for the establishment of Beringer Vineyards because this site, situated around the present-day winery, first attracted founder Jacob Beringer to the property in 1875. The vineyard is formed of a sloped alluvial fan of rock and gravelly soils with little capacity to hold water. Planted entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon, its fruit has been a key component of the Private Reserve Cabernet since 1982.
