Vinous

"The 2012 Cinq Cepages is plump, juicy and forward. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, menthol, mocha and dark spices are all pushed forward. This is a decidedly radiant, supple Cinq Cepages that should provide readers with a good decade-plus of fine drinking. As always, Cinq Cepages is bold, racy and fruit-driven in style." - Antonio Galloni, 2016

Tasting Note

The outstanding quality of the 2012 vintage shines in this Cinq Cepages wine. The nose offers layers of complex aromas including black currant, chocolate covered Bing cherry, wild mountain blackberry fruit, cassis and a soft sweet earth note. Nuanced notes of spicy jasmine and crushed rock are intriguing and add depth to the nose. The aromas lead to a plush palate with rich flavors of boysenberry, dark chocolate and black tea. The full-bodied wine is refined with well-integrated, ripe tannins offering good structure. In signature Cinq Cepages form, this wine combines the strength of the diverse Sonoma County region to create a well-balanced and elegant wine.

Vineyard

Each year, Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren selects fruit from the finest Bordeaux varietal vineyards to craft a wine that showcases the best of Sonoma County. The primary grape source for the 2012 vintage is the recently approved Moon Mountain District within Sonoma Valley, giving structure to the blend with black, dense mountain fruit. The Knights Valley fruit brings boysenberry flavors and elegant tannins while the Dry Creek Valley fruit adds lush juiciness and rich texture. Finally, the Alexander Valley grapes in the wine highlight bright berry with back notes of dried herbs.

Winemaking

The 2012 Cinq Cepages ('Five Varieties') is a blend of the classic Bordeaux grapes consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon (84%), Merlot (6%), Cabernet Franc (6%), Malbec (2%), and Petit Verdot (2%). All five varietal components are used each vintage to create the stylized blend that is Cinq Cepages. Before blending, each component is aged separately for twenty months in mostly French (94%) and some American 6%) oak, with just over half of all the barrels being new (53%). Once the components are assembled, the blend spends an additional year in the bottle before release.
