Scores & Accolades

    Wine Advocate

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is a beautifully balanced wine. Firm yet well-integrated tannins frame a core of dark red berries, flowers, mint, spices and licorice. The Reserve shows lovely inner perfume and mid-palate juiciness. It should drink well with a minimum of cellaring. The main vineyards in the 2009 are Home (37%), Lampyridae (23%), Vogt (14%), Chabot (11%) and Rancho del Oso (9%). Each lot was aged separately for about two years before the final blend was assembled. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029." - Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, December 2011

    Vinous

Bright, saturated ruby-purple color. High-toned aromas of crushed boysenberry, blackberry liqueur, licorice pastille and violet. Densely packed, big and rich but not heavy, with penetrating acidity buffering the sweetness of the dark berry fruit. This rather powerful midweight finishes with lush, sweet tannins and excellent length. Quite structured, firm and fresh for a 2009 Cabernet. When I mentioned to Laurie Hook that this wine struck me as a bit high in volatile acidity, she responded that virtually all of these wines are between 0.65 and 0.75 ppm." - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, July 2015

    Wine Spectator

"Intense and rustic, with a rangy mix of dried berry, earth, leather, roasted herb and tobacco leaf flavors. A cool-year Cabernet that should benefit from cellaring, yet will always show its sturdy build. Best from 2014 through 2026." - James Luabe, Wine Spectator, October 2012

Winemaking

Laurie Hook - Former Winemaker

Laurie Hook, Beringer's Winemaker Emeritus, began her career in the winemaking program at University of California at Davis, which is noted for training some of the best winemakers around the world. Upon graduating in 1984, she traveled to Australia to work at a small winery. After returning to work a harvest in Sonoma, Laurie came to Beringer as an enologist in 1986, a job that allowed her to solidify the scientific side of her training. In 1997, she was named Assistant Winemaker to Beringer Winemaster Ed Sbragia, and in 2000 she was promoted to Winemaker for Beringer Vineyards. Laurie lead our winemaking team for 15 years before transitioning to winemaker Emeritus in 2015.

Vintage

The 2009 growing season was marked by a mild season overall. Light spring rains gave way to a serene, warm summer. Temperatures stayed even through August, giving the grapes an ideal timeframe in which to develop good acidity and phenolics. Overall yields were on the smaller side, making for intense varietal characteristics and flavor development immediately evident at harvest.
